Silchar: Goods movement to Mizoram may be affected from Sunday as the Silchar Truck Drivers’ Association has announced a “steering down” agitation over alleged restrictions and harassment of Assam-registered truck drivers.The association alleged that Assam trucks carrying consignments to Mizoram faced increasing hurdles in recent days. It also claimed that trucks transporting sand from Assam were being stopped from entering the state.A spokesperson on Friday alleged that some organisations in Mizoram were insisting that goods be transported in Mizoram-registered vehicles instead of Assam trucks. The association said this could affect the livelihoods of drivers and transport operators, particularly in the Barak Valley.Silchar and other parts of the Barak Valley are a major transit corridor for supplies to Mizoram, with trucks carrying essential commodities, construction materials and other goods using the route daily.It submitted memorandums to the Cachar district commissioner and the CM’s office, seeking govt intervention, and appealed to truck drivers across Assam to join the agitation.Its primary demands are unhindered movement of Assam-registered trucks carrying legitimate consignments to Mizoram and protection of drivers’ and transport operators’ livelihoods.The agitation could disrupt supplies to Mizoram, which depends substantially on road connectivity through Assam. NH-306, linking Silchar with Aizawl, is a crucial supply route.The association warned of intensifying the agitation if the issues were not resolved soon. There was no immediate response from the Mizoram govt or organisations concerned.
