Woman robbed at knifepoint in Panchkula; accused held

Panchkula: Panchkula police have arrested a 26-year-old man accused of robbing and molesting a young woman at knifepoint in Sector 7 on Aug 23.The accused, Neeraj, a native of Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh who was living as a tenant in Chandigarh, was produced before a court Thursday and remanded in police custody for two days.Police said the incident occurred around 9.30pm when the accused allegedly threatened the woman with a knife, snatched her mobile phone and molested her before fleeing. A case was registered at Sector 7 police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).The arrest was made by the crime branch-2 team headed by inspector Praveen Malik following a tip-off. Police secured a two-day remand of the accused and are now trying to recover the stolen mobile phone as well as the Splendor motorcycle allegedly used in the crime.DCP (crime and traffic) Amrinder Singh said the investigation was under way and efforts were on to gather further evidence.Commissioner of police Pankaj Nain said the accused was also being questioned about his possible involvement in other snatching cases. He said the police were following a zero-tolerance policy against theft and snatching, with dedicated teams actively tracking offenders.
