Dibrugarh: Members of the Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) and Asomiya Mahila Mancha (AMM) protested in Amguri town of Sivasagar district on Wednesday over the rising prices of essential commodities.The protesters carried LPG cylinders and hung mustard oil bottles around their necks as they took out a procession through the main roads of the town. Led by Asomiya Yuva Mancha secretary Akash Saikia, they raised slogans against the govt and demanded measures to control the prices of essential commodities.The demonstration focused particularly on the rising cost of cooking oil and LPG, which, the protesters said, was putting pressure on household budgets. They said the increase in the prices of daily-use items was making it difficult for ordinary families to manage their monthly expenses.“We have taken to the streets today with mustard oil bottles and LPG cylinders because they have become symbols of the common man’s suffering. The govt talks of development and growth, but on the ground, a mother struggles to afford a single litre of cooking oil. The increase is not limited to one particular item. Prices of all essential commodities have been increasing every day, and the burden is being felt by ordinary consumers. The govt should take effective steps to ensure that basic household items remain affordable,” Saikia said.The protesters demanded an immediate rollback in the prices of essential commodities and called upon the state and central govts to take concrete steps to control inflation.They also submitted a memorandum to local authorities, urging swift action to ease the burden on consumers. Their demands included closer monitoring of retail prices, action against illegal hoarding and profiteering, and steps to ensure an adequate supply of essential commodities in local markets.
