Kolkata: While parts of the city got scattered rain on Wednesday the Met office has alerted enhanced rain in the weekend. A system brewing over the Bay of Bengal is likely to add to the city’s rain count which is already on a surplus note. Some areas along the coast are likely to get some heavy shower between Saturday and Monday.According to the Met officials, a passing trough at the lower level is causing the current spells of scattered rain. Met scientists at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Kolkata are keeping a close track on a weather system likely to develop by the weekend. If developed, this system will bring more rain in the city and other parts of south Bengal by the weekend. Districts like East and West Midnapore and neighbouring South 24 Parganas could get some intense rain during this period/“There is a possibility of a cyclonic circulation developing over around the North Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood during Aug 29 to 31. In such a case we can expect enhanced rainfall activity in Kolkata while there are chances of heavy rainfall at some places over the coastal districts and neighbourhood during that period,” said meteorologist Sourish Bandyopadhyay of RMC Kolkata.Frequent formation of weather systems like low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal this monsoon has been keeping the rainfall activities alive on most days this month. Kolkata has already received a rain amount of 389.4 mm this Aug against a normal of 308.6 mm, making a monthly rain surplus of 26%. The seasonal rain amount for Kolkata till date is 1094.8 mm while for south Bengal as a whole is 922.1 mm.“Overall Kolkata has a seasonal rain surplus of 12% while for south Bengal the seasonal surplus is around 8%,” said a Met official.The scattered rain and partly cloudy sky ensured the maximum temperature was below normal for the second day. At 32°C it was 0.7 notches below normal.
