Ahmedabad: The civic body’s initiative to streamline animal management and boost rabies control is faltering as pet owners show little enthusiasm for the city’s mandatory registration drive. The drive has yielded just 19,816 dog and 263 cat registrations so far.AMC is currently charging a pet dog registration fee of Rs 2,000 for the window spanning July 1 to Sep 30. Official data reveals that the 19,816 pet dogs were registered between Jan 1, 2025, and Aug 25, 2026, as fees were gradually hiked in phases from Rs 200 to Rs 500, Rs 1,000, and finally Rs 2,000.The West Zone leads with 5,014 dog registrations, followed by the North West Zone (4,120), East Zone (2,860), South West Zone (2,652), South Zone (2,382), North Zone (2,008), and Central Zone (780). Labradors, German shepherds, pomeranians, Siberian huskies, Shih Tzus, pugs, dobermans, and golden retrievers emerged as the most popular registered breeds.To manage aggressive animals, AMC has also established kennels across four locations with a combined capacity of 657 dogs. Additionally, two shelters capable of housing 600 dogs are under construction in Vastral and Lambha.Of the 263 registered cats, 99 are native-breed cats, while the remaining 164 belong to other breeds, according to AMC data. The largest number of cats, 64, were registered in North West Zone.
