Chandigarh: AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang on Wednesday accused the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) of becoming a “centre of loot”, alleging selective action against shopkeepers during a demolition drive in Saini Majra village in Mohali.Kang, whose Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency includes the village, visited the area after residents complained that GMADA had selectively demolished structures over alleged unauthorised construction.“GMADA lutt da kender ban gaya hai… I want to tell the chief minister through you that GMADA has become a centre of loot. We will have to end this,” Kang said, announcing that he would gherao GMADA on Friday.Kang alleged that shops of those who refused to pay bribes were demolished while those who paid officials were spared. “These are poor people, who earn just enough to feed themselves. It is their shops being demolished,” he said.A GMADA official said 57 unauthorised structures had been removed from five villages over two days along PR-4 and PR-7 after notices were issued and the notice period expired. The authority has sought a report on why some structures highlighted by Kang were not removed.SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa seized on Kang’s remarks to target the AAP govt. Majithia said Kang’s allegation reflected the wider condition of the govt, while Bajwa questioned why the MP was addressing the CM through the media rather than raising the issue directly with him.
