Raj to deploy 90k EVMs for ULB polls

Jaipur: Rajasthan will use around 90,000 EVMs in upcoming urban local body elections, including 40,000 multi-post multi-vote EVMs.State Election Commission (SEC) said 30,000 MPMV EVMs are being sourced from Madhya Pradesh and 10,000 from Rajasthan’s stock. Of 50,000 EVMs requested from Election Commission of India (ECI), 35,000 have arrived and 15,000 are expected soon.SEC secretary Rajesh Verma said two votes can be cast at one time with MPMV EVMs. Therefore, ideally, 90,000 EVMs will serve the purpose of 1,30,000 EVMs.The elections will cover 10,245 councillor posts across 10 municipal corporations, 47 municipal councils and 252 municipalities. The election notification will be issued on Aug 27, with nominations to be filed by Aug 31. Scrutiny of nominations will be held on Sept 1, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until Sept 3.The polling will be held in two phases on Sept 9 and 11, with counting scheduled for Sept 14.More than 1.4 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise, including 73.9 lakh men, 70 lakh women and 511 third-gender voters. The SEC will set up 16,465 polling centres for the elections. More than 1.1 lakh personnel will be deployed for polling, counting and other election-related duties.
