Foxconn eyeing likely investment in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Taiwan-based Hon Hai Technology Group, better known as Foxconn, the world’s leading electronics contract manufacturer, is scouting for a land parcel of more than 200 acres to set up a technology park and high-end electronics manufacturing facility. Apart from other locations in the country, the company has reportedly expressed interest in a land parcel near Sanand in Ahmedabad district for the project.According to top sources in the government, Foxconn executives have surveyed the plot of land near Sanand and the company will take a call on finalizing the location in the coming weeks.“The company intends to set up a mobile phone and other high-end electronics manufacturing plant,” a senior state government official said, clarifying that Gujarat is not the only state being considered by the company for the new project. Sources said Foxconn is exploring potential locations in other states as well before taking a final call on the investment.“The Gujarat government has offered customized incentives and all possible assistance to facilitate the project. The recently announced industrial policy, which seeks to make the state more investor-friendly, could be supplemented with special incentives for Foxconn,” said a source close to the development. The proposed investment would strengthen Gujarat’s efforts to emerge as a hub for electronics manufacturing, particularly as the state seeks to build an integrated ecosystem around the semiconductor industry and mobile phone manufacturing.Foxconn already has a significant footprint in India. In Uttar Pradesh, the company, in partnership with the HCL Group, is setting up a technology and semiconductor park in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority area. It also operates an electronics assembly facility in Tamil Nadu and has announced plans for a technology hub near Bengaluru in Karnataka. With Foxconn now evaluating Gujarat for another major manufacturing project, the state is seeking to leverage its industrial infrastructure around Sanand and its growing electronics and semiconductor ecosystem to attract the global electronics giant.
