Pune: Lack of garbage vehicles has hampered daily lifting in the city with waste piling up in several spots in the last few days. Residents have complained about unattended trash and rain making it worse. The civic administration is adding at least 250 vehicles to its fleet by next month to improve garbage lifting.Elected representatives from various areas said deployment of vehicles should happen before Ganeshotsav considering the significant rise in garbage generation during festive days. Corporators, who have been constantly facing anger from citizens over improper garbage management, raised the issue in a recent general body meeting.Corporator from Sinhagad Road Harish Charvad said despite raising garbage problems in every general body meeting there has been little progress. “Festivals are round the corner, and the administration will have to prepare a comprehensive plan to deal with daily waste. Otherwise the situation will worsen,” he said.Sources from the administration said that the city generates around 2,200 MT waste every day after the merger of 23 areas. Daily waste will rise by 50 to 100 MT during Ganeshotsav.Sanjay Sawant, a resident of Model Colony area, said heaps of garbage are visible on many roads. “The situation is challenging by the day. The administration needs to improve waste collection and processing,” he said.The administration is already facing a tough situation as the residents from Phursungi and Uruli Devachi have been agitating against new waste processing plants in their areas.Additional municipal commissioner Prajit Nair said more garbage trucks are expected next month. A solid waste management department official said that 250 vehicles and 30 compactors will be added. There are over 375 vehicles and more than 750 ghantagadis involved in transport and collection of dry and wet waste.
