Surat: The Diamond City’s skyline is set to rise higher, with the state government’s Special Technical Committee (STC) approving a 142.99-metre multi-storey commercial building near Pal RTO, which is set to become the tallest building in the city. The project, being developed by a private developer, will surpass Surat’s two existing structures that stand above the 100-metre mark.Under the tall-building guidelines, the project has been granted a maximum Floor Space Index (FSI) of 5.40. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will receive Rs 30.56 crore as an additional infrastructure charge from the project.The proposal was first submitted to the STC on June 17 and was subsequently revised in line with the committee’s requirements before being resubmitted for final approval. The STC is headed by the principal secretary of Urban Development and Urban Housing and includes experts in structural engineering, soil mechanics, fire services and other specialised fields.In a separate decision, the SMC cleared the redevelopment of the Man Darwaja tenement colony, paving the way for rehabilitation of 1,312 families who had owned flats in the colony before it was demolished after being declared dilapidated.The redevelopment project had been allotted to a developer earlier, but construction remained stalled despite several rounds of discussions and modifications as technical and planning issues remained unresolved. With these issues now addressed, the project will move into the execution phase following approval by in charge municipal commissioner Tejas Parmar, an SMC official said.Besides residential rehabilitation, the redevelopment plan includes a fire station to cater to the textile market area, a school and an anganwadi, adding civic infrastructure to the redeveloped colony.
