GURGAON: Electric vehicle buyers in Gurgaon can now register their vehicles without paying motor vehicle tax, with the Haryana government’s new EV tax exemption policy coming into effect from August 21.The exemption is giving buyers savings running into lakhs of rupees at the time of registration.The first EVs under the new system were registered in the Gurgaon and Badshahpur subdivisions, officials said.A Gurgaon resident, Vikrant, saved Rs 2.45 lakh in motor vehicle tax while registering a Mahindra BE Formula EV.In Badshahpur, Rashil Goyal received a tax benefit of Rs 81,120 on registration of a Tata Tiago EV.The new policy provides 100% exemption from motor vehicle tax on new battery-operated electric vehicles costing up to Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom.Electric two-wheelers, autos, e-rickshaws and electric four-wheelers are covered under the exemption.For EVs priced above Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom, the policy provides a 50% exemption on motor vehicle tax.Gurgaon DC Uttam Singh said the policy would provide direct financial relief to buyers while encouraging a shift towards cleaner transportation.“The policy is an important step towards environmental protection as well as providing financial relief to citizens.Wider adoption of electric vehicles will help reduce pollution and strengthen clean and green transportation,” Singh said.Vikrant said the complete waiver of Rs 2,44,900 in motor vehicle tax had provided substantial relief during registration.Goyal said the Rs 81,120 benefit would provide an additional incentive to people considering electric vehicles.Badshahpur SDM Sanjeev Singla said the tax exemption would be available only for EVs purchased and registered in Haryana.Vehicles bought in other states will not qualify for the motor vehicle tax benefit under the scheme.Officials said the exemption is expected to make EV ownership more attractive in Gurgaon, where rising vehicle numbers and pollution have increased the need for cleaner transport options.
