Gurgaon: MCG’s water management data has revealed that while the civic body now serves 1.9 lakh active water consumers, nearly 68% of all connections remain unmetered, highlighting the challenge in curbing water losses and improving billing efficiency.According to officials, the number of active water consumers has increased more than sixfold, from around 30,000 in 2013 to 1.9 lakh at present. The data, however, shows that of the total active connections, only 63,169 (32.5%) are fitted with water metres, while nearly 1.3 lakh (67.5%) continue to receive water supply without metering. The data also reflects fluctuations in revenue recovery over the past four financial years. In 2022-23, the corporation raised a demand of Rs 67.6 crore and recovered Rs 35.4 crore, achieving a recovery rate of 52.3%. Recovery fell to 43.9% in 2023-24, with Rs 39.7 crore collected against a demand of Rs 90.3 crore. The recovery rate improved to 74.6% in 2024-25, when Rs 29.4 crore was recovered against a demand of Rs 39.42 crore. In 2025-26, MCG collected Rs 74.7 crore against a demand of Rs 106 crore, translating into a recovery rate of 70.5%.For the current financial year (2026-27), recoveries have already exceeded the demand raised so far. Against a demand of Rs 19.9 crore, the civic body has recovered Rs 28.1 crore, resulting in a recovery ratio of 141%, indicating that arrears are also being recovered. The civic body is working to modernise its water management system, officials said. As part of the initiative, 465 ultrasonic smart metres will be installed, while GIS mapping of tubewells, boosting stations and other water assets is underway to improve monitoring of the distribution network and reduce non-revenue water.MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said the corporation is implementing a comprehensive plan focusing on revenue recovery, identification of unbilled areas, action against illegal connections and modernisation of the water supply network. “The aim is to increase revenue collection while also providing citizens with better and more reliable water services,” he said.Dahiya added that the civic body is also conducting a drive against illegal water use. Officials said 95 challans have been issued so far, with penalties amounting to Rs 5.39 lakh, while 225 illegal or non-compliant water connections have been disconnected.Officials have urged residents to access services such as applications for new water connections, bill downloads, online payments, correction of consumer details, temporary disconnection, reconnection and certificate issuance through the civic body’s online portal, with time-bound processing and application tracking.According to officials, the new system introduced by the civic body includes mobile-based meter reading, real-time bill generation, SMS notifications, online grievance redressal, audit trails and multi-level digital approvals to improve service delivery and administrative efficiency.
