Youth back from Ludhiana sans kidney, state orders probe
State health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee visits Mongal Mondal at the hospital on Wednesday

Kolkata: A 31-year-old youth, who has returned from Ludhiana, has complained that one of his kidneys was extracted without his consent at a hospital there. Mongal Mondal is admitted to Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy Multispecialty Hospital (DBCRMH) in Salt Lake, where state health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee visited him on Wednesday.“Forcefully removing the kidney is a huge complaint and I came to see the complainant myself when I got this information. A USG test has confirmed the absence of the left kidney and a mark of surgical incision on Mondal’s abdomen. This case needs through probing,” said Mukherjee, hinting at the possibility of a inter-state kidney racket.According to Mondal’s complaint, he was lured to Punjab with promises of better prospects compared to his job as a daily wage earner at a glove manufacturing factory. He alleged he was lured by Prabhat Mondal, who promised employment as a housekeeping staffer in a hospital. Accordingly, Mondal took a train to Ludhiana about a month ago.Mondal claimed a man called Shakil received him there and took him to the hospital, and Mondal was asked to undergo certain medical tests before joining duty. He fell asleep after an injection, and, when he woke up he found a huge incision on his abdomen. He travelled back to Kolkata and lodged the complaint at Bidhannagar North Police Station.DBCRMH medical superintendent Partha Pratim Guha said,”Police sent the complainant to our hospital. A USG report has confirmed that his left kidney is absent. We have done a CT scan for another confirmation. We will submit the report to police.”Prabhat was arrested. During investigation, cops discovered Prabhat, too, has only one kidney, suggesting that he himself could have been a victim of a kidney racket and is now working as a middleman to trap others.Mondal also claimed that he was promised Rs 3.5 lakh as a one-time payment along with the job but his family was paid only Rs 1.6 lakh.“A kidney racket is something to be concerned about. We will try to bring about stringent laws after discussing the matter with CM Suvendu Adhikari,” Mukherjee said.
