Dibrugarh: Jorhat has imposed a night curfew along the Assam-Nagaland border following intelligence inputs about possible extremist infiltration.District Magistrate Jay Shivani on Friday prohibited the movement of people and vehicles within a five-kilometre belt on the Assam side of the border from 8 pm to 5 am.The order cited inputs from the Intelligence Branch and district police that extremist organisations may attempt to enter Assam through the Nagaland border and create disturbances in Jorhat district. Unrestricted movement in border areas, particularly at night, could disrupt peace and create law-and-order problems, it said.Source reports also suggested that Ulfa-I recruited new volunteers and could use the border areas to transport them and for other activities.The curfew was imposed under the BNSS. Army and security personnel, police, magistrates, forest officials and other law-enforcement personnel on duty are exempt.“The imposition of prohibition orders along with a night curfew in the Assam-Nagaland bordering area has been a long-standing practice which has played an important role in the prevention of interstate crimes and anti-national activities,” the order stated. It added that such restrictions deterred extremist activity, as criminals frequently used the border as an inter-district transit route.The order will remain in force until further notice. Violations will attract prosecution under Section 223 of the BNS.
