Water shortage at Mumbai University girls hostel: High court initiates suo motu PIL

Mumbai: Bombay high court on Monday took suo motu cognisance of news reports regarding lack of basic facilities-including water shortage-at Mumbai University’s Madam Cama Girls Hostel in Churchgate.The news reports said the water shortage affected over 100 students who had to buy drinking water and even fetched water from neighbouring buildings. They also had problems with using the washroom. Last year, the students complained about deteriorating living conditions including erratic mess services and poor lighting.Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad referred to two newspaper reports. “It pertains to girl residents of the hostels and the issue is a bit serious. It also pertains to their menstrual hygiene and so many other things,” said Justice Ghuge. They appointed advocate Yugandhara Khanwilkar as amicus curiae to assist the court and requested her to research the issue, gather sufficient information and prepare a petition. The hearing has been posted for Sept 1.
