Noida: Greater Noida residents have sought tighter checks on when streetlights are switched off to prevent unnecessary power consumption. While residents of several sectors, including Omicron, Gamma and Delta, have complained about non-functional lights, some areas such as P3 have reported lights remaining on well beyond the stipulated time.“We submitted a request to the additional CEO of GNIDA, urging a review of streetlight operation times, as currently the lights remain switched on well into the daylight,” Amit Bhati, president of the RWA of P-3, said.According to residents, streetlights in several sectors across the city stay lit till around 6.30am, long past the recommended switch-off time of 5am.“This practice is resulting in an estimated one and a half hours of unnecessary electricity expenditure each day, which not only contributes to waste but also increases financial burdens on the Authority,” Bhati added.Residents said they have repeatedly written to GNIDA on this issue, but there have been no adjustments made on the ground, prompting Bhati and the RWA to escalate their concerns. In the letter to officials, residents sought timely adjustment of streetlight operations to align with both energy-saving measures and the welfare of residents.On the other hand, residents have also noted that many areas in the city do not have functional streetlights. At some spots, streetlights are turned off in the dead of the night at random, while other stretches have not had functional streetlights in weeks or even months. Dark patches raise the risk of accidents and are a threat to residents’ safety, they said.Residents said they are hopeful that officials will take swift action to implement changes, ensuring better management of resources and promoting energy conservation throughout the city. GNIDA officials, meanwhile, said they would conduct inspections and take action as necessary.
