Rewari: The widely circulated video of an ATM robbery on social media has turned out to be an attempted theft involving tampering with the machine in Dharuhera town of Rewari district, police said.Sisters Annu Kaur and Jyoti Kaur, residents of Sare Khurd village in Rajasthan’s Khairthal-Tijara district, have been arrested in connection with the case.The case stems from an incident reported at a private ATM kiosk near the Dharuhera bus stand. According to the complaint filed by the ATM operator, the footage of CCTV cameras revealed two women entering the booth on Aug 10. One of them allegedly withdrew Rs 100 using an ATM card and inserted a metal strip into the cash-dispensing shutter when it opened. The duo later returned to the kiosk and allegedly used a screwdriver and other metallic tools to tamper with the machine to access cash.The incident came to light after an engineer inspecting the ATM noticed that the cash-dispensing shutter had been damaged. Subsequent scrutiny of surveillance footage helped investigators identify the suspects.Addressing reports that had gone viral on social media, Bawal deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Surender Sheoran categorically dismissed claims of a daylight robbery.“The reports circulating on social media describing the incident as an ATM robbery are misleading. This was not a case of robbery or dacoity. It involved an attempt by two women to tamper with the ATM and steal cash. Both accused have been arrested,” the DSP said.A case has been registered at the Sector 6 police station against the two sisters. Preliminary inquiries have not revealed any previous criminal record against either of the accused, officials said.
