Mohali: Passengers at Kharar railway station will soon get relief from major safety hazards, with the Northern Railways’ Ambala division awarding the tender for a new foot overbridge (FOB) and sanctioning the elevation of platform no. 2.The official confirmation followed a grievance submitted on Aug 10, 2026, to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) by local activist Arun Kumar, who highlighted the severe safety risks commuters face while crossing railway tracks due to the lack of an overbridge.Responding to the PMO complaint, additional divisional railway manager (ADRM) DS Meena stated that the FOB contract has been awarded and structural design work is currently underway, with physical construction scheduled to begin immediately after design approval.Addressing concerns over platform no. 2, Meena confirmed that raising it to a high-level platform has been approved. A detailed cost estimate is awaiting final clearance, after which the project will move to the tendering phase.The activist’s grievance highlighted heavy passenger footfall at Kharar railway station, noting that elderly commuters, children, women, and persons with disabilities face severe risks while crossing tracks or climbing into train coaches from the low-lying platform.Assuring rapid implementation, ADRM Meena emphasised that both safety projects are being processed on priority and will be completed as per the approved timeline.
