Chandigarh: A comprehensive engineering and ecological study will be undertaken to address soil erosion and ensure the long-term stability of the 3.4-km Kansal Diversion Canal, an important drainage channel feeding Sukhna Lake.The Wetland Authority has approved the study and directed the UT engineering department to assess the canal and identify suitable soil and moisture conservation measures.The canal carries runoff from the catchment area towards Sukhna Lake and stretches from the Kaimbwala Entry Gate to Saketri Bridge on the Nepli side, before joining the lake. Soil erosion has been observed at several locations along the channel, raising concerns over its stability and the efficiency of water flow into the lake.As part of the study, engineers will undertake a detailed field-based assessment to identify vulnerable stretches and determine the need for grading, revetments, protection structures and other measures to prevent further erosion. The assessment will also examine measures to strengthen the canal while ensuring that its natural drainage function is not adversely affected.The Engineering Department has been asked to complete the assessment by November 2026. Based on the findings and recommendations, conservation and stabilisation works will subsequently be taken up in a phased manner.The entire project is proposed to be completed within two years, with the focus on protecting the canal from further erosion, improving its structural stability and ensuring uninterrupted conveyance of runoff to Sukhna Lake.Officials said the intervention is aimed at strengthening the long-term sustainability of the diversion canal while supporting the ecological conservation of Sukhna Lake.
