Artists demand ban on inappropriate performances during Ganesh festival
Artists have demanded that authorities establish an independent regulatory mechanism to prevent indecent lavani and DJ dance events with clear, strict rules

Pune: Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal and other artists have demanded that govt authorities ban obscene music and groups that promote offensive dance performances during the Ganesh festival processions.Their demand aimed to deter Ganesh mandals and workers from objectionable behaviour. During a news conference on Tuesday, artists demanded that authorities establish an independent regulatory mechanism to prevent indecent lavani and DJ dance events with clear, strict rules. The Mahamandal said it had received complaints regarding improper behaviour, showering of money, inviting audience members onto the stage and performances that caused embarrassment to female artists during some of these events. Involvement of minors in such shows was also a serious social issue.“Authorities should not treat the events as entertainment and adopt a strict stance regarding public order, as well as the safety of women and children,” said Mahamandal chairperson Megharaj Rajebhosale.“Lavani represents a beautiful blend of acting, dance, emotion and the culture of Maharashtra. Defaming this rich art form using unseemly DJ remixes and through inappropriate gestures is incorrect. As artists, it is our responsibility to uphold the dignity of art,” said artist Tina Sharma Ghevare.
