Son of Indira assassination convict is Waris Punjab De’s 1st assembly poll candidate

Amritsar: Satwant Singh, son of Kehar Singh, who was executed for his role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has been named the first candidate of the party led by jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh for the Punjab assembly elections.Satwant, 61, will be fielded by Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) from Bassi Pathana seat in Fatehgarh Sahib district, party spokesperson Shamsher Singh Padhri said on Monday.Interestingly, Amrit Kaur Maloya — daughter of Indira Gandhi assassin Beant Singh — has expressed her desire to contest from Bassi Pathana as an independent. She is the sister of Waris Punjab De’s Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa.On Tuesday, members of the party’s parliamentary board held a religious programme at the Akal Takht and paid obeisance under chairman Tarsem Singh. Dakha MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali also attended the event.Padhri said the board members prayed for the Chardi Kala of the party, strengthening of the Panth and welfare of Punjab. Newly appointed board members were honoured with Siropas.Tarsem Singh said the parliamentary board would take decisions impartially, keeping the interests of the Panth and Punjab above personal considerations.He said candidate selection would be based on the interests of the Panth, Punjab and public welfare, without favouritism or individual interests.
