Varanasi: A 51-year-old woman and her 26-year-old son were found dead in a room at a homestay in Varanasi’s Luxa police station area on Monday, a day after her husband died during treatment. Police said preliminary investigation suggests suspected poisoning as a packet of poison was recovered from the room.The deceased, Jaya Mukherjee (51) and her son Ishan Mukherjee (26), were residents of Raigad in Maharashtra. Forensic teams collected evidence from the spot, while police sent the bodies for postmortem.According to police, Jaya had come to Varanasi with her husband Vishal (56) and son for Kashi darshan on Aug 7. The couple checked into the homestay and visited temples on the first day and later returned to their room.Vishal, who was suffering from a serious illness, fell critically ill on Sunday night. With the help of homestay staff and police, he was taken to the BHU Trauma Centre, where doctors declared him dead.On Monday, the homestay management informed police after Jaya and Ishan were unresponsive in their room. Police reached the spot and broke open the door. They were found dead inside the room. Officials said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the postmortem report.ADCP Kashi Zone Vaibhav Bangar and ACP Dashashwamedh Atul Anjan also visited the homestay and questioned the manager and staff. Police are examining the family’s activities before the incident and the circumstances following Vishal’s death.Initial suspicion is that Jaya and Ishan may have been under severe emotional distress after Vishal’s death. However, police have not officially confirmed the reason behind the incident and are investigating all angles.Police are also contacting other family members in Maharashtra to gather more information.
