Gurgaon: At a time when the city is grappling with damaged roads, sanitation, waterlogging, and a host of civic problems during the monsoon, MCG is operating with more than half of its existing sanctioned posts vacant.The corporation has 427 sanctioned posts, of which only 209 are filled, leaving 218 vacancies, which is a vacancy rate of 51%, according to MCG’s staff position as of July 29. The manpower shortage assumes significance as the civic body continues to face pressure over basic services, particularly drainage, roads, sanitation and waterlogging.Heavy monsoon rains have repeatedly paralysed the city with waterlogging and traffic chaos, even as MCG faces a severe staff crunch. As of July 29, 2026, the health and sanitation wing has 13 vacancies out of 16 sanctioned posts (81.3%), and the accounts wing has 13 out of 19 posts vacant (68.4%).MCG’s engineering wing, which had reported a vacancy of around 40% in previous years and was always among the departments with the largest shortfall, with key positions like junior engineers, executive engineers, and assistant engineers lying vacant, has now seen a marked improvement. As of July 29, 2026, the wing had 53 of its 62 sanctioned posts filled, leaving just nine vacancies (14.5%). Despite this improvement, the engineering wing remains crucial to MCG’s ability to address roads, drainage, waterlogging, and other infrastructure-related works.“We are short-staffed and will send our requirements to the state government. We are pursuing this aggressively,” MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya told TOI.The urban local bodies (ULB) department, however, recently issued a new order providing for a much larger organisational structure for the civic bodies, including municipal corporations of Gurgaon and Faridabad.For each corporation, ULB provides 231 posts at the head-office level and 678 posts across six division offices, taking the new sanctioned structure to 909 posts per corporation.This 909, however, includes the existing sanctioned posts. The new structure covers a wide range of functions, including administration, engineering, urban planning, transportation and mobility, architecture, enforcement, revenue and taxation, sanitation and veterinary services, finance, legal, health, technology, and municipal land and asset management.While the expansion of the sanctioned workforce marks a positive step, the real challenge lies in filling the 218 current vacancies and converting the 909-post framework into tangible deployment of personnel across critical areas — engineering, drainage, roads, sanitation, enforcement, and other civic services.
