Panaji: South Goa District Hospital has recorded 71 dengue cases in the first 10 days of Aug, with 27 patients requiring hospital admission.Dengue cases detected at the hospital’s lab rose sharply from 9 in May to 39 in June and more than doubled to 91 in July, said the hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Rajendra Borkar.From eight dengue case admissions in May, the hospital reported 29 admissions in June which more than doubled to 79 admissions in July and has already seen 27 in Aug.“Our humble request to all the people is to get tested in case of fever and headache for more than 2-3 days and get treated as early as possible,” he said.On the whole dengue is a pre-monsoon and peri-monsoon disease, Borkar said, with the mosquito breeding in clean stagnant water in and around households. He said the present situation with intermittent spells of rain is a classic environment where the dengue mosquitoes can breed. “Dengue is an indoor biter and indoor breeder. They breed near houses, and the dengue mosquitoes are multiple biters. Unlike malaria there is no specific treatment for dengue. Only supportive care is given to the patient.”“We request people to ensure that mosquitoes don’t breed in surroundings,” Borkar said.
