Chandigarh: Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Sunday targeted Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, questioning his “desperation” for an electoral alliance with BJP after Badal’s “U-turn” on the issue of constituency delimitation. In a written statement, Warring said while the SAD had strongly opposed the delimitation bill in April, calling it detrimental to Punjab’s interests, the party has now reversed its stance. “What changed within these three months that you started seeing merit in the same bill you previously claimed was against Punjab’s interests?” Warring asked, adding that Badal had become “more loyal than the king”.The Punjab Congress chief alleged Badal’s shift stems from political survival as he attempts to woo the BJP ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. He said although Badal previously claimed he would not compromise Punjab’s interests for an alliance during the Lok Sabha polls, his recent actions show otherwise.Warring maintained that a SAD-BJP tie-up would fail at the polls. “People of Punjab have neither forgotten the sacrilege nor the atrocities on farmers that the two parties are respectively guilty of,” he asserted. “Their coming together will hardly make any difference to their electoral fortunes, but will instead expose their opportunism,” he added.Warring’s attack comes after Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament on Friday, triggering speculation about a potential re-alignment. Following a meeting with senior party functionaries on Saturday, Badal said the SAD supports a fair delimitation exercise that ensures an equal increase in representation across all states.
