Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation may be easing, but the threat persists as the Dikhou river in Sivasagar continues to flow steadily and the Dhansiri in Golaghat is rising. More than 1 lakh people remain affected across the state.According to the IMD, Assam recorded heavy rainfall of 7-11 cm in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday. The Met department’s forecast of heavy rain in Assam and Nagaland over the next three days has raised fresh concerns, particularly in parts of Golaghat and Sivasagar bordering Nagaland that have already suffered extensive flood damage.The Central Water Commission’s flood bulletin showed the Brahmaputra rising at Dibrugarh on Sunday morning. Among its tributaries, the Dhansiri was flowing above the danger level at Golaghat and Numaligarh. The river, which originates in Nagaland, has inundated several villages and croplands in recent days, causing extensive damage. Dhansiri-driven flooding left Golaghat with the highest number of affected people among Assam’s districts on Saturday evening. The river was rising at the Golaghat gauge station, while its level remained steady at Numaligarh.In Golaghat’s Morongi area near Numaligarh, rising Dhansiri waters spilled into several villages and submerged stretches of village roads from Sunday morning. Hundreds of households in the greater Numaligarh area remain surrounded by floodwaters, forcing residents to move to relief camps. Areas such as Puli Koroiani in Dergaon have remained cut off for days, with banana-tree rafts serving as the only means of communication.In central Assam’s Nagaon district, the Diju river continues to inundate more than 30 villages under the Samaguri revenue circle. Eight villages in Kaliabor and three in the Nagaon revenue circle are also facing flooding. Floodwaters have also washed away fish from several fisheries in the district.Other rivers showing a rising trend and flowing close to the danger level on Sunday morning included the Ranganadi in Lakhimpur district in upper Assam; the Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul in Nagaon and Morigaon districts; the Puthimari in Kamrup district; and the Beki in Barpeta and Baksa districts in lower Assam.Floods showed marginal improvement in Assam, with the affected population falling to 1.37 lakh from 1.47 lakh and the number of affected districts dropping from 12 to 10 in 24 hours. However, two more flood-related deaths, one each in Golaghat and Karbi Anglong, in the last 24 hours took the season’s toll to 100. One person remains missing in Karbi Anglong.ASDMA said a death from Sivasagar was reported twice, and the actual flood death toll in the state stood at 98 as of Saturday.
