Noida: Construction of the 5.5-km Chilla Elevated Road has crossed the halfway mark, with the project now scheduled to be completed by July 2027. Foundation work has been executed for 280 of the 296 piers, while work on the remaining ones is under way, a Noida Authority official said.“Nearly 55% of the project work has been completed. The remaining work includes placement of pier caps, which will support the girders, precast segments and deck slabs,” he said. “This will be followed by road surfacing, waterproofing and drainage. Streetlights and signage will go up at the end. We aim to complete it by July although the deadline is Dec 2027.”Noida Authority and the police have diverted traffic coming from the Sector 14 flyover towards Udyog Marg. Commuters have been asked to keep to the left on Udyog Marg to continue their journey to Delhi. This was required as a pier has come up in the middle of the road. When the rest of the pillars come up on the road, more traffic diversions will be made, said the official.The six-lane elevated stretch is being developed to streamline the traffic flow between Delhi and Noida and offer an alternative to Noida Expressway, which frequently witnesses bottlenecks. The elevated corridor is expected to ease congestion from Mayur Vihar to the Mahamaya flyover, offering a smoother transit route for commuters travelling from east Delhi to Noida, Greater Noida and further to Noida International Airport.A commuter, Sumit Kumar, said during peak hours there are snarls between the Chilla border and Mahamaya Flyover. “It takes half an hour to cover this 5-km stretch. This elevated road is important and the Authority should expedite the work,” he said.Conceived almost a decade ago, the project saw little progress in its early years and gained momentum only in 2018. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation stone in 2019, formally initiating construction activities on the ground.The project, however, soon ran into financial and logistical hurdles, including realignment necessitated by gas pipelines and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2020, work had come to a complete halt, with only 13% of the project completed. No construction activity took place between 2021 and early 2025.In 2022, the construction agency sought a substantial revision in the project cost — from Rs 605 crore to Rs 1,076 crore — citing escalation in material prices and changes in design specifications. Noida Authority, however, rejected the proposal at the time.A breakthrough came in June 2023, when the state govt approved the revised project cost. A fresh tender was floated, and MG Contractors eventually secured the contract by quoting a price 7% lower than the estimate. The project cost was subsequently finalised at Rs 893 crore, paving the way for construction to resume.
