Pune: Cybercrook, posing as an official of Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL), duped a 66-year-old Kothrud resident of Rs5 lakh in a piped-gas bill fraud. The fraud took place in Aug last year. The man filed an online complaint, following which the Alankar police registered a case on Thursday.An officer said the complainant received a call from an unknown number in Aug last year. The caller claimed to be an MNGL official and told him his gas bill of Rs12 was pending. He asked the complainant to pay immediately, warning the gas supply would be disconnect or else.“The crook shared a link for making the payment. The complainant entered his details and transferred Rs 12. But the link downloaded an APK file onto the complainant’s phone. The crook gained access to his bank account and siphoned off Rs5 lakh through three transactions. We have sought details of those transactions from the complainant’s bank,” the officer said.
