Rajkot: An afternoon outing ended in tragedy on Friday when four young migrant workers from Rajasthan drowned in the Umai River near Nagara village, in the Wadhwan taluka of Surendranagar district.The deceased are Mohanram, Jeevaram, Khusharam and Ramesh. According to preliminary investigations, the four had come from Rajasthan to work at a solar plant near Nagara village. Khusharam had arrived in the village just a day earlier, only to lose his life.Local residents said that a group of five youths had gone to the river for a dip on Friday afternoon. Cautious of the river’s depth and strong current, one youth chose to remain on the bank while the other four entered the water. Almost immediately after stepping in, all four were swept into a deep section of the river.The youth on the shore promptly raised the alarm, prompting people to rush to the scene. Villagers launched rescue efforts, but despite their attempts, they were unable to save the four young men.On learning of the drownings, personnel from Joravarnagar police station went to the spot, secured the area and handled the recovery. The bodies of the four victims have been retrieved and sent for postmortems.
