Combing drive in Ahmedabad: 66 vehicles impounded, 7 prohibition cases filed

Ahmedabad: A combing operation by city police commissioner between midnight and 5am on Friday led to checks of 4,712 vehicles and registration of seven prohibition and two NDPS cases, police said. Around 2,000 police personnel, including senior officers, took part in the drive that covered 59 locations.Police impounded 66 vehicles under the Motor Vehicles Act for being driven without required documents or insurance, while black films were removed from 82 vehicles. Twenty-four motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol. Three others were booked for allegedly driving dangerously. Police also registered 13 cases for violation of a notification under the Gujarat Police Act and 16 cases for violation of the notification banning possession of weapons.The seven prohibition cases resulted in seizure of 27 bottles of liquor valued at Rs 6,511 and 19 litres of countrymade liquor worth Rs 3,800. Police said other property seized in the liquor cases was valued at Rs 6.6 lakh. Twenty-one people were also booked for allegedly consuming liquor.The two NDPS cases involved seizures from vehicles. In the Gaekwad Haveli police station area, officers checking vehicles allegedly found 359 bottles of prohibited cough syrup valued at Rs 63,543 in a car and detained three people. In the Kagadapith area, police allegedly recovered 115 grams of ganja, valued at Rs 5,075, from a two-wheeler and detained a person. Police also registered two cases against externed persons and checked 199 history-sheeters.
