New Delhi: In a road safety initiative by Delhi Traffic Police aimed at improving driver awareness and reducing crashes, commuters using Google Maps and MapMyIndia will soon receive real-time alerts while approaching accident-prone stretches in the city.These alerts by the navigation apps are aimed at helping drivers exercise caution while negotiating the risky areas and encouraging responsible behaviour behind the wheel.According to traffic police, the city’s 10 identified accident-prone blackspots are concentrated along some of its busiest arterial roads, particularly Grand Trunk Karnal Road, Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and Rohtak Road. The spots include Singhu Border, Swaroop Nagar-Libaspur Bus Stand, Bhalswa Chowk, Mukarba Chowk, Haiderpur Metro Station, Azadpur Chowk, ISBT Kashmere Gate, ITO/IP Flyover and Peeragarhi Chowk.In another first, traffic police will integrate prescribed maximum speed limits for roads across the capital into Google Maps and MapMyIndia. Drivers using these apps will be able to see the limits on the stretches they are travelling on, making it easier for them to comply with traffic regulations and reducing the risk of speeding-related crashes.Officials said the initiatives, in collaboration with the two platforms, will build on traffic police’s increasing use of technology to improve traffic management while disseminating real-time information on congestion, diversions and road closures. By combining navigation services with road safety information, authorities hope to help commuters make better decisions on roads.
