Yashvir Singh, who won a bronze medal in men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games (CWG), received a grand welcome in his hometown Jaipur on Tuesday evening. For celebrations and felicitations, Yashvir has been shuttling between his birthplace, Haryana, and Rajasthan, where he was raised. The 24-year-old athlete, who doesn’t want to rest on his laurels, was back to training on Wednesday. He says, “There is no break for me; performance is way more important. I am preparing for the upcoming World Athletics Continental Tour Silver Level Meet in Bhubaneswar on August 22.”‘Great feeling to win a CWG medal’Yashvir, who recorded a personal best of 85.41m at the CWG, says, “It’s a great feeling that I won, but I need to maintain it too. I gave my best and now, I need to practise regularly. I cannot rest (on my laurels).” Yashvir, who lives with his family in the railway colony at Ganesh Nagar, inherited his passion for sports from his father, Rai Singh—a former national-level javelin thrower and athletics coach—who backed his son’s dreams and also trained him. His grandfather was an athlete too, while his younger brother Utsav is also a javelin thrower. Yashvir recollects, “When I started training for javelin at the age of 13, my first coach was my father. He knows my strengths and shortcomings. Getting trained by him worked very well for me and I enjoyed every training session. He cracks jokes, entertains me, and also scolds me if required. Watching him in the audience, cheering for me, was a big boost. I never thought of winning; I just wanted to give my 100 per cent.”

‘Have been practising with Neeraj Chopra’Talking about sharing the podium with Neeraj Chopra, who won silver, he says, “I have been training with Neeraj Chopra sir at the Patiala camp for almost a year, and he has always guided me on how to improve. He is an inspiring and supportive sportsperson. Sharing the podium with him is an experience that I will always cherish.” Posted with Indian Railways in Jaipur, Yashvir has always been focused on his goals, and has even stopped attending weddings and family functions. “In order to stay focused and follow a strict routine and diet, we have to compromise on many things, including attending get-togethers. I am very strict about what I eat; so, I avoid attending these functions,” he says.
