Mohali: Days after the Punjab vigilance bureau (VB) arrested a senior clerk posted in the deputy commissioner’s office in a bribery case, it on Thursday apprehended a private driver while he was allegedly accepting a Rs 5,000 bribe in Mohali.The accused, identified as Amandeep, works with Raftar Tools and Travel Company in Mohali.According to the VB, the action followed a complaint by a resident of Kurukshetra, Haryana. The complainant alleged that Amandeep demanded Rs 60,000 to facilitate a compromise with the owner of the company, who had earlier lodged a complaint against him at a police post. The amount was allegedly brought down to Rs 40,000.Instead of paying the money, the complainant approached the vigilance bureau’s flying squad-I in Mohali. Acting on the complaint, the VB laid a trap and caught the accused while he was allegedly accepting Rs 5,000 as the first instalment of the bribe in the presence of two official witnesses.A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Mohali. Further investigation is under way.The arrest comes close on the heels of the VB’s recent action against a senior clerk in the Mohali DC office in a separate bribery case, signalling the agency’s continued crackdown on corruption in the district.
