Ludhiana: A man who allegedly tried to rob a cyclist was thrashed to death by a mob in Sahnewal area on Wednesday evening.Eyewitness Deepak Kumar told the police that he was standing on the terrace of his workplace when he saw two men riding bicycles. Two persons on a motorcycle intercepted one of the cyclists. The pillion rider allegedly attacked the cyclist with a sharp-edged weapon in an attempt to rob him. The other cyclist then came to his rescue.Deepak said both cyclists started pelting stones at the robbers. One of them pulled the snatcher’s leg, causing him to fall. By then, passersby had gathered at the spot. The two cyclists and other people caught hold of him, while his associate managed to flee on the motorcycle.They allegedly tied the man to an electricity pole and brutally thrashed him with bricks and sticks, inflicting grievous injuries. He died on the spot, after which the mob dispersed.Sahnewal police lodged an FIR against unidentified accused under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 191(3) (rioting armed with deadly weapons) and 190 (every member of an unlawful assembly guilty of an offence committed in prosecution of a common object) of the BNS on Deepak’s complaint.ASI Karamjit Singh, the investigating officer from Sahnewal police station, said police have registered a case against unidentified persons. The deceased has not been identified so far, as no identity proof or mobile phone was found on him.The body of the man, who appeared to be around 30 years old, has been kept at the mortuary of Ludhiana Civil Hospital while police continue efforts to establish his identity.Incidentally, police did not find any CCTV cameras near the spot that could have helped identify the assailants.
