Clarify on Family Register Certificate, HC directs EC

Hyderabad: Telangana high court on Thursday sought Election Commission’s response in a petition challenging inclusion of Telangana Family Register Certificate as a valid eligibility document for the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR)-2026 of the electoral rolls. The petitioner, T Uma Mahendra from the Charminar assembly constituency, alleged that because the certificate relies solely on the food security card and ration card database, it should not confer any legal right. A division bench, comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin, who heard the case, posted it to Aug 12 for further hearing. The petitioner urged the court to declare the GO, authorising the certificate as a valid document, as illegal and direct authorities to not consider the certificate. The petitioner also urged the court to issue appropriate directions to the election authorities in this regard to not facilitate any entries and corrections to the rolls.
