Kolkata: CBI arrested absconding suspect Arup Das on Thursday in connection with the 2021 murder of BJP activist Abhijit Sarkar during post-poll violence in Kolkata’s Kankurgachi area.Das was caught in Assam while boarding a train to Delhi. Officials said he had been hiding under a false identity and working as a train coach attendant. CBI had earlier announced a Rs 50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. He will be produced before a local court in Assam so CBI can obtain transit remand and bring him to Kolkata for trial.Sarkar was killed on May 2, 2021, after an armed mob allegedly attacked a BJP party office in Narkeldanga. Investigators said Sarkar fled to his nearby home, but the mob chased him, dragged him out and assaulted him. His family alleged he was strangled with a wire and beaten to death.Kolkata Police first investigated the case, but Sarkar’s family moved Calcutta High Court, seeking an independent probe. The court later handed the investigation to CBI.
