Jason Arday, a sociology professor who became one of the University of Cambridge’s most high-profile academics, has resigned after facing allegations of plagiarism, and the university has announced fresh investigations into his academic qualifications, career history, and ongoing complaints of academic misconduct.Arday announced his immediate resignation on Wednesday, saying the scrutiny surrounding his work and public profile had become overwhelming.“It is with profound sadness that I write to resign, with immediate effect, from my position at the University of Cambridge and Jesus College,” he said in a statement published on the Good Law Project website, which The Guardian cited.He added: “The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love.”
Why is Arday under investigation?
Cambridge said it had opened a new investigation after receiving “new information” concerning Arday’s academic qualifications and honorary appointments.In a statement, the university said: “The University of Cambridge has begun an investigation following new information about Prof Arday’s academic qualifications and honorary appointments.”It added that separate complaints relating to alleged academic misconduct remain under review under the university’s research misconduct policy.A spokesperson said the institution would not comment further while the process is ongoing, adding that it continues to support Arday during the investigation.Jesus College, where Arday is also a fellow, said it would run its own parallel process linked to the university’s inquiry.

Arday was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge in 2023 at the age of 37, becoming the youngest Black professor in the university’s history.His personal story attracted widespread attention. He has spoken publicly about being diagnosed with autism as a child, saying he was unable to speak until the age of 11 and did not learn to read or write until he was 18.After earning his PhD in 2015, he held academic posts at Leeds Beckett University, Roehampton University, Durham University, the University of Warwick, and the University of Glasgow before joining Cambridge.
Previous plagiarism allegations
Arday first faced plagiarism allegations last year involving parts of his PhD thesis and other academic work.An investigation by Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his doctorate in 2015, did not uphold the plagiarism allegations, concluding that any issues were likely the result of “honest and reasonable error.”Arday has consistently denied any academic misconduct.“There have been multiple thorough investigations across several institutions as a result of the allegations, and immense scrutiny, including with an academic misconduct panel who concluded that there was no plagiarism or academic misconduct,” he told the newspaper.
Questions over career claims
Recent scrutiny has also focused on claims made in Arday’s biographies about visiting fellowships and professorships at several universities.Among them were references to a visiting role at Ohio State University, which the institution has said he never held. Published biographies have also referred to visiting appointments at Durham, Glasgow, Coventry, London Metropolitan and Nelson Mandela University.Questions have also been raised over public claims that he completed 30 marathons in 35 days, ran 600 miles in six days, and helped raise £5 million for charity. Arday later revised some of those claims, saying he had been part of a fundraising group that he could not identify for legal reasons.He had also said he and his family were subjected to threats after his appointment at Cambridge, including a claim that a severed pig’s head had been delivered to his parents’ home. Subsequent investigations found no evidence supporting that allegation.
