BJP, Sarv Samaj hold talks; Rathore assures action, chakka jam put on hold
BJP state president Madan Rathore and Sarv Samaj coordinator Mahipal Singh Makarana address the media in Jaipur Wednesday

Jaipur: The first round of talks between BJP and Sarv Samaj over Monday’s police lathi charge ended on a positive note Wednesday, with both sides claiming progress after state BJP president Madan Rathore assured protesters that their key demands would be taken up with the govt. While Sarv Samaj has not withdrawn its call for a Jaipur chakka jam, it said the agitation would depend on govt’s action against police personnel involved in the lathicharge.Rathore, who returned from Delhi Wednesday, held a closed-door meeting with Sarv Samaj coordinator and Shri Rajput Karni Sena chief Mahipal Singh Makrana and other representatives. He termed the death of Devraj Singh Palara, whose family has alleged that he died after his health deteriorated following Monday’s protest, as ‘unfortunate’.Rathore said Rs 21 lakh, collected by members of the community, was handed over to Devraj’s family. He added that govt was considering the demand for a job for the deceased’s wife. “The govt is serious about resolving all genuine concerns. If there was any excess by the police, that too will be looked into,” Rathore said after the meeting.Makrana described the discussions as “positive”, saying Sarv Samaj had accepted that the demand for the rollback of the UGC’s Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026, would have to be addressed by Centre. The outreach comes amid intervention by BJP’s central leadership, which has sought a report from its Rajasthan unit on the police action. According to party sources, senior leaders have sought details of the events leading to the lathicharge and questioned whether the state govt had adequately assessed the scale of the mobilisation before police resorted to force.
