Kolkata: In a major push to enhance public transit safety, the state govt-backed Yatri Sathi app has launched its shuttle bus service across key commuter corridors in Kolkata. Woman commuters will remain their priority.The initiative aims to offer a secure, comfortable, and affordable air-conditioned travel option for IT workers and Salt Lake-New Town bound commuters from both northern and southern fringes, addressing long-standing demand for added shuttle bus services.The service currently operates along major office routes, including Bally–Barrackpore–Serampore to Sector V, as well as Sonarpur to New Town. The pricing structure offers an introductory fare of Rs 39 for a passenger’s first trip, after which regular rides in the AC buses are capped at Rs 69.Originally introduced on a trial basis in July across two test routes, the state-backed platform is now expanding its fleet. It is likely to cover Behala and Garia next.The entry of Yatri Sathi into the app-based shuttle segment follows a period of volatility in Kolkata’s private transit market. A private cab aggregator major had previously introduced a similar shuttle service, but failed to sustain operations. Following their withdrawal of its shuttle bus services from the city, at least three private operators quickly moved in to capture market share.“Travelling from Sonarpur to New Town during peak office hours used to be stressful. Having a dedicated, comfortable AC shuttle service that prioritizes women makes the daily commute feel significantly safer,” said Sunita Roy, a commuter from Sonarpur. “Private office buses and cabs often charge exorbitant rates during peak hours,” said Sagnik Banerjee, a commuter from Bally. “A flat Rs 69 fare for an AC ride to Sector V is a huge relief for us.”
