CHENNAI: PMK president and Rajya Sabha MP Anbumani Ramadoss on Tuesday criticised both Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin over his controversial remarks and the subsequent police action against him, saying both actions were inappropriate and should have been avoided. In a statement, Anbumani urged the ruling and opposition parties to move away from political vendettas and focus on constructive governance to address Tamil Nadu’s pressing issues. Referring to Udhayanidhi’s remarks during a demonstration in Thanjavur against the proposed Mekedatu dam project, Anbumani criticised the tone and nature of the speech.“The remarks made by opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin during the Thanjavur protest were, in no way, acceptable and lacked dignity. A person who has served as deputy chief minister and now holds the responsibility of leader of the opposition should learn to speak in a respectful and dignified manner,” Anbumani said. While condemning Udhayanidhi’s remarks, Anbumani also criticised the government and police for carrying out his arrest in haste. He said the arrest was unnecessary, especially as the Madras high court had advised avoiding any arrest until 12 noon and the state Assembly was scheduled to meet the following day.Anbumani alleged that the urgency shown by the government and police in this case, which he said is rarely seen while addressing major public issues, indicated that the action was politically motivated.Highlighting the challenges faced by Tamil Nadu, Anbumani said both the ruling and opposition parties should focus on finding solutions instead of engaging in political conflicts. He stressed that political leaders should use their time and energy to address public grievances rather than indulging in personal attacks or political mudslinging. He also urged the government to take all necessary steps to ensure that law and order across Tamil Nadu remains unaffected following the arrest of the Leader of the Opposition.
