SILCHAR: A 15-year-old Class IX student was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her home in Assam’s Hailakandi district on Saturday night, with police arresting three people in connection with the case after questioning five suspects. Two of those detained were later released. According to police, the girl’s mother had gone to a neighbour’s house to attend a traditional post-funeral ritual. When she returned home, she found her daughter lying in a pool of blood and raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to inform the police. While local residents alleged that the teenager was sexually assaulted before being killed, police said they were awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death and whether any sexual assault had taken place. Hailakandi Superintendent of Police Amitabh Sinha and other senior district officials visited the scene and later met the victim’s family, assuring them of a fair and expeditious investigation. The incident sparked protests, with residents blocking National Highway 6, which connects Hailakandi with Mizoram, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible and exemplary punishment. Traffic was disrupted for several hours before police cleared the blockade. Hailakandi MLA Milon Das visited the victim’s family and called for a swift, impartial investigation and stringent action against those found guilty.
