Guwahati: Moderate rain submerged NH-27 at Jorabat on Monday, stranding hundreds and crippling a crucial regional road link.Severe waterlogging on the Assam-Meghalaya border paralysed traffic for over an hour, disrupting connectivity between parts of the northeast, central and upper Assam and the rest of the country. The flooding lasted about two hours.The India Meteorological Department recorded 28 mm of rain in Guwahati till 5:30 pm, with officials saying a significant share was concentrated around Jorabat. Heavy rain is forecast in Guwahati and adjoining areas on Tuesday.“A few hours of rainfall inundated both sides of the highway in at least three stretches on Monday. In fear that their vehicles might get damaged, many people kept their vehicles stranded and thus there was heavy traffic congestion,” a traffic police officer at Jorabat said.Waterlogging at Jorabat remains a recurring monsoon problem, with authorities yet to find a lasting solution. On Friday, Jorabat and the nearby Eighth Mile and Tenth Mile areas were inundated, halting traffic on both sides of the highway.Commuters said flooding was particularly severe this year. Tourist cab operators have also reported booking cancellations for trips to Meghalaya.Cab driver Debashis Doloi said he took nearly an hour to cross the 3-km stretch on Monday afternoon. “Crossing the Jorabat area has become problematic these days. We’re losing many bookings,” he said.
