Mohali: After remaining on paper for decades, the long-awaited Mohali police lines project has finally begun to take shape, with the earmarked land in Sector 90 near Chappar Chiri now barricaded and construction-related activities set to start.Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans Friday reviewed the project’s progress at a meeting attended by SP (headquarters) Ramandeep Singh and other officers. He directed officials to complete the motor transport (MT) shed within a week and expedite the tendering process for the main construction through the Punjab Police Housing Corporation.“We have got the earmarked land near Chappar Chiri barricaded and the project is now rolling. The next step is the installation of the MT shed, for which directions have been issued to complete the work within a week. Meanwhile, the Police Housing Corporation will float tenders for construction of the buildings,” said Hans.Mohali has functioned without a dedicated police lines since the district was carved out. Over the years, police personnel have been housed in rooms at police stations, reserve force complexes and a temporary facility in Phase 1, arrangements officials say have become inadequate for the expanding force.The proposed Police Lines-cum-Judicial Officers’ Residential Complex will come up on 11.41 acres in Sector 90, opposite Sector 76 and the District Administrative Complex. Besides residential accommodation for police personnel and judicial officers, the project will include modern administrative infrastructure for the district police.Hans said the district had finally secured land for the project after sustained efforts and coordination with the district administration. Approvals have already been received, and departments concerned have been asked to finalise designs, prepare the detailed project report (DPR) and fast-track construction.The SSP said the project would significantly improve living and working conditions for police personnel while strengthening policing infrastructure in Mohali.
