Dibrugarh: Deputy mayor of Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC), Ujjal Phukon, has proposed a multi-level parking facility at the Dibrugarh Town railway station to ease congestion.Phukon submitted the proposal to Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on Wednesday. The facility has been proposed near the old railway car shed in the city centre.Phukon said rising private vehicle ownership had caused acute parking shortages and increased traffic congestion.“Dibrugarh has been grappling with a severe parking shortage for years, and it has only worsened as the city has grown. A dedicated multi-level parking complex at the railway station will reduce roadside parking, ease traffic flow and offer much-needed convenience to commuters and visitors alike,” Phukon said.The proposal outlines a 60:40 revenue-sharing arrangement between Indian Railways and the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation. Phukon said the model would enable optimal use of railway land and help create urban infrastructure without placing additional financial strain on either party.Vaishnaw assured Phukon that the proposal would be examined with due importance.If approved, the project could reduce roadside parking and ease congestion in commercial areas. The proposal assumes significance amid Dibrugarh’s projected status as Assam’s second capital and growing scrutiny of its civic infrastructure. Officials have long identified the lack of organised parking as a barrier to smoother urban mobility.
