GUWAHATI: Nearly 13,000 households in Assam‘s flood-hit districts remained without electricity nearly 11 days after an unprecedented mud-filled deluge ravaged parts of the state, even as the death toll rose to 78 and over three lakh people continued to be affected.Nearly 12,756 consumers in the flood-affected areas are still without electricity, according to a flood impact and power supply status report prepared by the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) and shared by the chief minister.The affected areas include Gaurisagar, Sivasagar, Nazira, Amguri and Demow.Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said power supply was being restored in phases after assessing safety conditions in the inundated areas.The administration is continuously assessing the flood situation in Upper Assam and taking decisions on restoring electricity connections based on safety, Sarma said.“Consumers without electricity have declined by a further 30 per cent. As water levels recede, we are continuously assessing safety conditions and will restore more transformers to the grid wherever it is safe to do so,” he said in a post on X.On July 24, Sarma had said that around 40,000 households did not have electricity supply although power had been restored to 75 per cent connections.Heavy rain in Nagaland and Upper Assam districts had triggered an unprecedented mud-filled deluge from the early hours of July 19, causing extensive damage across three districts.Despite water receding from most parts of the state, the flood situation remained grim on Thursday, with the death toll rising to 78 and more than three lakh people still reeling under the impact of the floods.Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, at isolated places across Assam and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland over the next three days, raising concerns for districts bordering the two states.(With PTI inputs)
