TNNGuwahati: With floodwaters receding across Assam, the state govt has begun shifting its focus from emergency rescue to rehabilitation and restoration, while relief operations continue in the worst-hit districts and the Centre steps up recovery support.The rehabilitation push came as PM Narendra Modi met 13 MPs from Assam, representing both the Houses of Parliament, to review the situation. The PMO confirmed that Modi discussed the situation with MPs and reiterated Centre’s support for affected people.BJP Assam spokesperson Mita Nath Bora said the PM had expressed grief over the loss of lives and reviewed the damage and ongoing rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures. He also assured continued central assistance for relief and reconstruction and said families of those killed would receive financial aid under existing norms.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said post-mortem examinations will be waived for flood victims to reduce hardship for bereaved families. “During a crisis, our response must be guided by compassion, not bureaucracy,” he said, adding that ex gratia assistance will be released without avoidable procedural delays.“As floodwaters begin receding, our focus is expanding from relief to restoration,” Sarma posted on X. He said food, tarpaulins, cleaning supplies and other essentials were being distributed as the government helped affected families return home and rebuild their lives.Specialised food kits containing rice, dal, edible oil and salt are also being packed and dispatched round the clock for distribution among flood-affected families.An inter-ministerial central team led by M Ramachandru, joint secretary in the Union home ministry’s disaster management division, continued assessing losses to crops, livestock and public infrastructure for the second consecutive day to facilitate central assistance.BJP Assam Pradesh also announced a Rs 12-crore initiative to provide relief materials to two lakh women and an equal number of children. Women will receive sarees and mekhela-sadors, while children will be given T-shirts and other essential clothing.
