Chandigarh: The Chandigarh administration Tuesday reviewed the online Tenancy Portal being developed for implementing the Chandigarh Tenancy Rules, 2026, ahead of its rollout for city residents.A meeting chaired by deputy commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav was attended by additional deputy commissioner, tehsildars and officials of the National Informatics Centre (NIC). During the meeting, NIC officers gave a detailed presentation on the portal and demonstrated its online workflow, including registration of tenancy agreements, generation of a Unique Identification Number (UIN), filing of rent revision applications and the proposed grievance redressal mechanism.The services will be made available through the Govt of India’s ServicePlus portal.After reviewing the platform, the deputy commissioner directed NIC to make the portal more user-friendly and accessible. He also asked officials to provide the interface in the local vernacular and ensure thorough testing before its public launch so that landlords and tenants can access services seamlessly.The Chandigarh Tenancy Rules, 2026, framed under Section 44 of the Assam Tenancy Act, 2021, as extended to the Union Territory of Chandigarh, have been published for inviting objections and suggestions from stakeholders within 30 days of notification.The proposed framework provides for online registration of tenancy agreements, issuance of a UIN within seven days, secure handling of tenancy data, OTP-based verification, online rent revision, time-bound dispute resolution and easier access to tenancy-related services.Officials said the initiative aims to formalise Chandigarh’s rental housing sector, ensure transparent and time-bound resolution of disputes between landlords and tenants, and reduce the burden on regular civil courts.
