Dibrugarh: The six-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), led by M Ramachandrudu, Joint Secretary (Disaster Management), Ministry of Home Affairs, visited multiple flood-affected areas of Jorhat district on Tuesday, accompanied by Jorhat District Commissioner Jay Shivani, to assess the extent of damage caused by this year’s floods.Besides Ramachandrudu, the team comprised Sanjeev Kumar Suman, Director, Central Water Commission (CWC), Ministry of Jal Shakti; Mahesh Kumar, Joint Director, Flood Control Division, Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance; Prabhat Kumar, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development; Dheeraj, Regional Officer, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways; and SVSP Sharma, Scientist-SF, National Remote Sensing Centre.The team began its tour by inspecting flood-damaged roads in the Bonai Jagduwar area, followed by a visit to the breached sections of the Jhanji river embankment in the Dhantola area under the Teok Revenue Circle. Officials examined the extent of the breach and its impact on nearby settlements and farmland.The team subsequently moved to several flood-hit localities under the Jorhat West Revenue Circle, including Da-Gayan Gaon and Shalmora, where they inspected breached embankments, riverbank erosion, and damaged roads. Members of the team interacted with local residents and officials to gather first-hand accounts of the destruction caused by the floodwaters.During the visit, the Central team held detailed discussions with heads of departments to gather complete particulars of the losses, including damage to infrastructure, agricultural land, and public utilities.“We have inspected the ground situation closely and taken note of the damage to embankments, roads, and agricultural land. The data shared by the district administration will help us prepare a comprehensive assessment for the Centre,” Ramachandrudu said after the inspection.District Commissioner Jay Shivani said the administration extended full cooperation to the team. “We have presented the complete picture of the destruction faced by our district, including the breaches at Dhantola and the erosion in the West Jorhat areas. We hope this will help expedite central assistance,” Shivani said.The team commended the efforts of the district administration, department officials, and employees for their dedication during the disaster and urged them to expedite repair and restoration work in the affected areas without delay.Jorhat is among the three districts identified as worst-hit by this year’s floods, with 1.37 lakh people affected so far. Charaideo remains the worst-affected district, with 1.88 lakh people impacted, followed by Sivasagar, with 1.54 lakh people reeling under floodwaters.The IMCT’s visit to Jorhat is part of its ongoing multi-day assessment covering Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat, which began on July 26 and will conclude on July 29. The team’s findings, along with a report from the Assam govt, will form the basis for the Centre’s decision on financial assistance to the state under the National Disaster Response Fund framework.
