Dibrugarh: Two motorcycle-borne men snatched a gold chain from a woman at Chowkidingee Chariali early on Tuesday.Rita Das, wife of retired PWD engineer Ranjan Hazarika, was returning from a morning walk at Chowkidingee Playground when the helmeted duo struck at 6.58 am. They fled, leaving her shaken but unhurt.“They came from behind so fast that I didn’t even understand what happened. One moment the chain was around my neck, and the next moment it was gone. I gave a brief chase, but they sped away,” Das said.Tuesday’s incident was the fourth such attack reported in just over a month. On June 22, two gold chains worth around Rs 12 lakh were snatched from a man at the Dibrugarh DC office entrance. Women were targeted along Dibrugarh Development Area Bylane-A on July 8 and near the Jagannath Temple gate on July 19.In each case, two men on a motorcycle allegedly fled before bystanders could react. The incidents were captured on CCTV, but police have yet to make any arrests.“It is shocking that despite CCTV footage being available for every one of these incidents, the police have not been able to nab even one culprit. What message does this send to criminals operating in this city?” said Parag Dutta, a resident of Udaypur, Chowkidingee.Residents alleged that many police-installed CCTV cameras at traffic points and other key locations have remained non-functional for over a year, hampering investigations.
