Kolkata: The Blue Line’s Kavi Subhash station may reopen in April or May 2027, sources said on Monday. Work to rebuild the Dakshineswar-bound platform inside the New Garia station has started. Services to the southern terminal station of the North-South corridor were suspended on July 28, 2025. The reason cited by Metro Railway was that heavy rain caused uneven settlement and major structural cracks in the platform-supporting pillars.The closure of the surface metro station at New Garia made life rather complex for commuters. They had to opt for alternate means of daily travel. The age-old feeder auto service from New Garia station was of no use anymore. A new auto stand has come up next to Shahid Khudiram and a few public buses were introduced.Sources said three out of the 80 piles (concrete dug around 22 m deep into the ground) have been completed. “Metro Railway hopes to complete the restoration and reopen Kavi Subhash station by the beginning of the next fiscal,” said an official.Ever since Kavi Subhash station was shut, Shahid Khudiram has been serving as the Blue Line’s southern terminal. Slow razing and dismantling of the roof, trusses and the damaged Dakshineswar (Up) platform began in May this year.The restoration of the Kavi Subhash station involves complete demolition and rebuilding of the flawed and cracked Up platform.Metro Railway has recently installed a rake reversal facility at Shahid Khudiram at Briji on EM Bypass for train turnarounds and switching of tracks. Once the restored Kavi Subhash terminal starts, the newly installed crossover (rake reversal facility) at Shahid Khudiram will be done away with and the original one at Kavi Subhash terminal will be made functional. The rebuilt station will feature a modified structural layout without a joint roof canopy spanning both platforms. Currently, the work area (the Dakshineswar-bound platform) has been barricaded; the shades covering both platforms have been fully dismantled after removing the tracks.
